Scripture- Matthew 12:48-50- Jesus asked, “Who is my mother? Who are my brothers?” Then he pointed to his disciples and said, “Look, these are my mother and brothers. Anyone who does the will of my Father in heaven is my brother and sister and mother!”
Observations- Was Jesus being impertinent or rude toward His family here? No, Jesus saw an opportunity to teach not that our families are unimportant, but that blood isn't thinker than the waters of baptism and new life in His name. As we see the will of God being done in our midst, these are our family members to be cherished and celebrated.
Application- Doing God's will matters more than anything else. Jesus taught that there would be times when we might not be in perfect alignment with our literal family when it came to doing the will of God. In Luke 12:52-53 Jesus says, "From now on families will be split apart, three in favor of me, and two against- or two in favor and three against. Father will be divided against son and son against father; mother against daughter and daughter against mother; and mother-in-law against daughter-in-law and daughter-in-law against mother-in-law.” What we do with Jesus, the Savior of the world, the Messiah, the Christ, trumps all other commitments.
Prayer- Lord, thank You for my family- my literal family and my family of brothers and sisters, mothers and fathers in Christ. It is good and beautiful when both of these are in alignment with Your best will. Help me do my part to have eyes to see who my family in You- brothers and sisters, fathers and mothers in Your church. Amen.
"Therefore, whenever we have the opportunity, we should do good to everyone—especially to those in the family of faith." (Galatians 6:10),
