Read Acts 27:27-44

ScriptureActs 27:30-32- Then the sailors tried to abandon the ship; they lowered the lifeboat as though they were going to put out anchors from the front of the ship. But Paul said to the commanding officer and the soldiers, “You will all die unless the sailors stay aboard.” So the soldiers cut the ropes to the lifeboat and let it drift away.

Observations- I've always thought of this chapter as a bizarre travelogue of the trials and tribulations along the way for Paul in getting to Rome and I've wondered why was this so important for Luke to include. First of all, Luke included it because he was with Paul. We must also remember the key verse for all of the Book of Acts: "But you will receive power when the Holy Spirit comes upon you. And you will be my witnesses, telling people about me everywhere- in Jerusalem, throughout Judea, in Samaria, and to the ends of the earth.” (Acts 1:8) This reveals the way that verse was being fulfilled in that generation through terrible storms, abject hunger, dire shipwrecks, and threats of death.

Application- Paul went to incredible lengths to be guided by the Holy Spirit to fulfill what it meant to be a witness for Christ in all the world. What he faced was far less important than getting the message out to as many people in as many ways as possible. This serves to remind us- in the midst of wherever our journeys carry us- to seek to be guided by the Holy Spirit to be witnesses of all Jesus Christ has done in our lives.

Prayer- (by St. Benedict- 480-547) Gracious and Holy Father, give us the wisdom to discover You, the intelligence to understand You, the diligence to seek after You, the patience to wait for You, eyes to behold You, a heart to meditate upon You, and a life to proclaim You, through the power of the Spirit of Jesus, our Lord. Amen.

"So Peter went over the side of the boat and walked on the water toward Jesus. But when he saw the strong wind and the waves, he was terrified and began to sink. 'Save me, Lord!' he shouted." Keep our eyes on Jesus through the storms!
