Scripture- Acts 21:30- The whole city was rocked by these accusations, and a great riot followed. Paul was grabbed and dragged out of the Temple, and immediately the gates were closed behind him.
Observations- An Anglican priest once said, "Wherever Paul went there were riots, but wherever I go they serve tea." Paul had the gift of agitation. The agitator in a washing machine is what created the action necessary to get the clothes clean. As an agitator Paul created space for vital and life-changing decisions to be made.
Application- Not everyone can or should be an agitator, but Jesus' church needs a few worthy and called people to stir things up now and again. It's not my gift, but once in a great while it is my calling. Where do you see the need to "agitate" and stir things up in a way that serves our mission to make more and better followers of Jesus Christ? This will require you to boldly "speak the truth in love" (Ephesians 4:15).
Prayer- Lord, I want to humble and bold. I want to honor the truth found in Your Word with grace. I want to be able to share Your Good News clearly, gently, and with respect, but when You lead me to be an agitator like the Apostle Paul, help me put on the full armor of God. If a riot comes instead of tea service, help me be ready to meet that moment with a firm mind and an open heart. Amen.
" A final word: Be strong in the Lord and in his mighty power. Put on all of God’s armor so that you will be able to stand firm against all strategies of the devil...Stand your ground, putting on the belt of truth and the body armor of God’s righteousness. For shoes, put on the peace that comes from the Good News so that you will be fully prepared. In addition to all of these, hold up the shield of faith to stop the fiery arrows of the devil. Put on salvation as your helmet, and take the sword of the Spirit, which is the word of God. (Ephesians 6:10-11, 14-17),
