Scripture- Luke 20:- “Well then,” he said, “give to Caesar what belongs to Caesar, and give to God what belongs to God.”
Observations- Once again some opponents sought to trick Jesus into a compromising answer, but He would have none of it. They tried to trap him with a question about taxes to Caesar, which were genuinely hated by the Jews, even as they were required by the Romans. One way or another they felt Jesus would mess this up, but instead Jesus answered in a way that honored the proper authority of government without denigrating the ultimate and higher authority of the living God.
Application- Just like Jesus we will often times find ourselves in some tough places where we have to discern the right way through the dilemmas we face. One thing this encounter teaches us is to never dishonor the ultimate and highest authority- God the Father almighty- as we also seek to properly honor other less significant, but important, authorities in our lives. One thing is clear- God always deserves the place of highest honor in our lives.
Prayer- (by St. Augustine- 354-430) Breathe in me, O Holy Spirit, that my thoughts may all be holy. Act in me, O Holy Spirit, that my work, too, may be holy. Draw my heart, O Holy Spirit, that I love but what is holy. Strengthen me, O Holy Spirit, to defend all that is holy. Guard me, then, O Holy Spirit, that I always may be holy. Amen.
These are no one's life verses :) "Pay your taxes, too, for these same reasons. For government workers need to be paid. They are serving God in what they do. Give to everyone what you owe them: Pay your taxes and government fees to those who collect them, and give respect and honor to those who are in authority." (Romans 13:6-7),
