Read Numbers 36

Scripture- Numbers 36:1- Then the heads of the clans of Gilead- descendants of Makir, son of Manasseh, son of Joseph- came to Moses and the family leaders of Israel with a petition.

Observations- Earlier in Numbers 27 some sisters- Mahlah, Tirzah, Hoglah, Milcah, and Noah- brought their concerns for justice and fairness to Moses as it related to the inheritance of property. What they asked for was outside the established rule, but instead of just rigidly adhering to the law in place, Moses listened to the women, reflected deeply, listened to God, and saw the wisdom of what the women asked for in light of their special circumstances. While the general law was upheld as valid, Moses also determined their issue had great merit for the entire community and granted a special exception. Here Moses again listened to these men, reflected deeply, listened to God, and saw the wisdom of the request made by these men.

Application- We can be right in the wrong way, which means we’re just plain wrong. Not every “special circumstance” is all that special, but each person deserves a listening ear and a caring heart regardless of whether we determine granting an exception is in order or not. Our heavenly Father always inclines His ear to us and leans into our lives. He may not always grant every request we make, but God is invested in us and willing to be involved in our lives. God loves us and longs to listen to our stories. If we will listen carefully for His response through His Word, other people, and His still, small voice, God may speak into our special circumstances in ways that surprise and delight us without violating His previously stated will for us.

Prayer- Thank You, Lord, for all the times You have told me “no” or “not yet.” Thank You for considering my special circumstances in leading and guiding me forward. I know that sometimes the situations I think are so “special” aren’t really all that extraordinary and that You will grant no exceptions when Your Word is clear, but I’m still glad You are willing to listen to me as I pour my heart out to You. Amen.
