Read Numbers 30

Scripture- Numbers 30:1-2- Then Moses summoned the leaders of the tribes of Israel and told them, “This is what the Lord has commanded: A man who makes a vow to the Lord or makes a pledge under oath must never break it. He must do exactly what he said he would do.”
Observations- This chapter puts adds clarity to the commandment to not lie by encouraging folks to be careful about the commitments they make as well. God was saying a person's integrity was riding on how well the pledge was lived out in daily life. This is also a legacy issue. If you wanted people to trust you, especially over a lifetime, then being a person who kept his or her word, even small things, was essential. Treating one’s word as a bond wasn't merely an issue of individual honesty; rather it was vital for the ongoing and life-giving functioning of the entire community.
Application- When you make a commitment- no matter how important or trivial- are people confident you will do what you said you would do? In our modern world we build in protections against lying by having legally binding, written contracts, but God tells us our spoken words should be just as binding in our relationships with Him and others as anything we put in writing. Can we be trusted? Do we speak the truth with love (Ephesians 4:15)? Is our word a solid foundation others can count on every time? It matters to God, so it should matter to us.
Prayer- Thank You, Lord, for all the times You have forgiven me when I’ve broken a promise or failed to live up to my word. I pray to truly become more and more a man of honor and integrity known for speaking the truth in love. Guide me to be wise about the promises I make, and give me the ability to follow through on what I commit to do, so I don’t embarrass myself or more importantly You. Amen.
"So stop telling lies. Let us tell our neighbors the truth, for we are all parts of the same body. And 'don’t sin by letting anger control you.' Don’t let the sun go down while you are still angry, for anger gives a foothold to the devil." (Ephesians 4:25-27),
