Read Deuteronomy 7

Scripture- Deuteronomy 7:9-10- Understand, therefore, that the Lord your God is indeed God. He is the faithful God who keeps His covenant for a thousand generations and lavishes His unfailing love on those who love Him and obey His commands. But He does not hesitate to punish and destroy those who reject Him.

Observations- Moses, speaking on behalf of God, was giving words to guide and direct the Israelites as they went into the Promised Land. God’s love for them was unconditional, but His blessing was not. God desired their faithfulness and obedience in defeating sinful practices that would from time to time give rise in their midst. They would be surrounded by people that were antagonistic or, at best, not interested in honoring the Lord’s commandments, so they needed to do everything possible to avoid being negatively impacted by the other nation's ongoing influence. Compromise with sin was not an option.

Application- No matter how faithful they were to not tolerate the sin of others as the Israelites inhabited the Promised Land that would never take care of the sin problem that resided within them. Temptation to fall short of God's glorious standard was enticing then- as it has remained in every age since. How do we eradicate the sin that makes a home in us? We keep saying a full-throated "Yes!" to an ongoing, life giving relationship with Jesus Christ. The longer we walk with Him the more He will gently and lovingly smooth out our rough edges and heal our blind spots. How do we deal with the sin all around us in this world? The first step is to be honest about our own sin and ask for God’s help. Jesus called us the light of the world, so our lives get to help others see Him more clearly.

Prayer- Dear God, help me be a gracious, kind, steadfast witness to Your love and holiness in this world that so often disregards or even pushes away Your love and gracious limits. I don’t want to make compromises and deals with the sin in my life, so come and be my Lord, not only my Savior. I wish it were as easy as pointing out and doing battle with the sin all around me, but I know I must mainly contend with the sin that lies within me. Help me today! Lord, we thank You for New Hope and the church universal as well. We pray for oneness and unity in the Body of Christ today. Amen.
