I urge you to check out this brief video on Deuteronomy, because it will help give you a helpful lens through which to view this last book of the Torah, the first 5 books of the Old Testament- https://thebibleproject.com/explore/deuteronomy/
Read Deuteronomy 2

Scripture- Deuteronomy 2:14-15- “Thirty-eight years passed from the time we first left Kadesh-barnea until we finally crossed the Zered Brook! By then, all the men old enough to fight in battle had died in the wilderness, as the Lord had vowed would happen. The
Lord struck them down until they had all been eliminated from the community.
Observations- Moses was reminding the people- many of whom hadn't been around many years earlier- that the journey had not required 38 years of wandering around in the desert. As a result of the complaining of the people and their refusal to listen carefully to God and respond faithfully with obedience, they experienced the consequences.
Application- How often have you made your own life far more difficult and problematic than it needed to be through your own poor choices? It's hard to take an honest moral inventory of where we have fallen short of the full glory of God. Sometimes we suffer the consequences of our unfortunate and wayward choices, but we should always be quick to race back into the arms of our loving Father.
Prayer- (by St. Thomas Aquinas- 1225-1275) O merciful God, grant that I may eagerly desire, carefully search out, truthfully acknowledge, and ever perfectly fulfill all things which are pleasing to you, to the praise and glory of your Name. Amen.
Sin will take us farther than we want to go, keep us longer than we want to stay, and cost us more than we want to pay,
