Read Joshua 16

Scripture- Joshua 16:10- They did not drive the Canaanites out of Gezer, however, so the people of Gezer live as slaves among the people of Ephraim to this day.
Observations- One of the important phrases that shows up a number of times in the Book of Joshua is “they did not drive out” a particular enemy. Various groups of people that the Lord gave very clear instructions to drive out of the Promised Land were permitted, for one reason or another, to stay. Whenever there is such disobedience in God’s Word, we can count on seeing consequences in later generations.
Application- None of us likes to face the music. There’s nothing fun about experiencing consequences for our disobedience, but God does allow us to go through the crucible of consequences to learn how to stay closely connected to our Good Shepherd. Most sheep know that they need to stay with the flock and the shepherd for protection, but a few sheep will always be prone to wander. The shepherd will do whatever it takes to help the wandering sheep learn not to get into dangerous situations, even if the consequences for wandering off are painful in the short run. Count on this- God cares far more about the development of my character than my personal comfort. What have you learned about yourself and God through consequences?
Prayer- Dear God, thank You for the reminders in Your Word to stay closely connected to You. Help me always stay with the flock and close to You as my Good Shepherd, for I know consequences will be in my future when I choose to stray by nibbling myself lost.
Help me work hard with You to reveal the results of the salvation You have given me as a gift by grace through faith in Jesus Christ. Amen.
