Read Genesis 2

Scripture- Genesis 2:24-25- This explains why a man leaves his father and mother and is joined to his wife, and the two are united into one. Now the man and his wife were both naked, but they felt no shame.

Observations- In Genesis 1 it didn't go into this kind of detail about the creation of human beings, and this story was designed to point to how central and vital God intended the union between a man and a woman to be- as a fulfillment of His plan for their mutual benefit. God wanted to be in an ongoing, growing relationship where both parties longed for the spiritual growth of the other.

Application- This points to the ideal of God's hopes for human flourishing in a relationship of marriage, which is not to say we can't flourish without being married. Nothing could be further from the truth, since our identity is found in Christ alone. Does this always play out the way we most want? Hardly. Will there be painful problems along the way? We wish it were not so, but as we shall see in the next chapter we miss the mark of God's full intention of our lives all too often. God's desire, however, is for us to always grow closer to Him, and if we are married the result will be that we grow closer to one another. How are you doing at growing closer to God in whatever your current circumstances?

Prayer- Lord, I thank You for my bride and the way she helps and challenges me to grow closer to You. I pray for people who are married to do all in their power to love and respect their spouse. I pray for married and single people to know You are with them and for them, and that their identity is not found in any human relationship, but in Christ alone...for Your glory. Amen.

"And further, submit to one another out of reverence for Christ." (Ephesians 5:21),
