Scripture- Genesis 33:10- But Jacob insisted, “No, if I have found favor with you, please accept this gift from me. And what a relief to see your friendly smile. It is like seeing the face of God!"
Observations- The anticipated meeting between the estranged brothers has been carefully orchestrated by Jacob. The last time Esau spoke was to vow to get even with Jacob for his deception by killing him, but now we see Esau respond with undeserved mercy toward his brother. Surprisingly, Jacob has found favor and reconciliation with his brother that is so sweet Jacob declares "It is like seeing the face of God!" They agree to meet again soon, but Scripture reports that Jacob goes off in another direction.
Application- That Jacob doesn't honor his word to Esau leaves us wondering if he had really turned from his path as a scoundrel and been transformed by wrestling with God, but we can rest in this unique moment. Perhaps Jacob merely changed his mind. How good it is for us to experience forgiveness and reconciliation! Have you ever experienced this kind of moment where it was like seeing the face of God?
Prayer- O God, thank You for all of the ways You have forgiven me. Help me forgive others as You have forgiven me. Help look into the faces of my brothers and sisters in the human family to see Your face as we are all created in Your very own image. Guide me to release my scoundrel ways and embrace the Jesus way. Amen.
"Yet now he has reconciled you to himself through the death of Christ in his physical body. As a result, he has brought you into his own presence, and you are holy and blameless as you stand before him without a single fault." (Colossians 1:22),
