Read Genesis 27

Scripture- Genesis 27:11-12- “But look,” Jacob replied to Rebekah, “my brother, Esau, is a hairy man, and my skin is smooth. What if my father touches me? He’ll see that I’m trying to trick him, and then he’ll curse me instead of blessing me.”

Observations- Jacob truly is a scoundrel and a deceiver. Having already convinced Esau to sell his birthright Jacob now connives with his mother to ensure the blessing. Rebekah births the plan and Jacob puts it into action without any sense that what they are doing is wrong. There is no way to sugarcoat the deception of Isaac. This is not a story advocating lying; rather it reminds us that we can't have a better past and that God can still be at work in our lives. Jacob is the son to fulfill God's destiny, but we don't have to like the way he and his mother orchestrated it. Of course, this action isn't without deep consequences of conflict and pain. There is learning there as well.

Application- In the story of Jacob God refuses to be put in a box and treated as a domesticated pet on a leash. Sometimes we just have to shake our heads at who God chooses to use for His glory. God loves to surprise us and work through the most unlikely people- people like you and me with all kinds of character flaws, painful hurts, and destructive habits. We worship and give thanks to this God far more than we can ever explain Him for using the likes of us to love Him, love others, and bless the world.

Prayer- Dear Lord, thank You for Who You are and for Your refusal to be created in my image. You are the "I Am Who I Am." Yes, You are with us and for us, and we thank You for never giving up on us or defining us merely by our past mistakes and sins; rather You find ways to remind us that we are created in Your image and that our chief purpose in life is to glorify You and enjoy You forever. Amen.

"Truly, O God of Israel, our Savior, you work in mysterious ways." (Isaiah 45:15),
