Read Genesis 36

Scripture- Genesis 36:1- This is the account of the descendants of Esau (also known as Edom).

Observations- Why is this even here? What purpose is served by a review of the descendants of Esau, since the promises of God and the covenant run through Jacob? Esau is treated with honor and respect through the narrative, for he, too deserves a place of honor as one created in the image of God, the one for whom in reconciliation Jacob said was like "seeing the face of God." There is a soft spot for Esau, because Jacob in fact deceived him.

Application- Esau being recognized and honored as important in his own right in Scripture serves as a reminder that all people matter to God. Not one person is left out of God's great love, even when so many of us even treat our birthright as being created in the image of God with so little regard. How will we treat each person we meet today, even those who dishonor God, themselves, and walk unworthily of their status as precious to the God who created them? This is about reaching out with the love of Jesus Christ to all people.

Prayer- Lord, thank You for Esau. He messed up by selling his birthright to Jacob for a pot of stew, but he was still created in Your image and You loved him, too. Help all of the Esau's who think they don't matter to anyone know they are precious to You. Help us communicate this truth through our words and deeds for the sake of Jesus, who died for all of us to experience His new life. Amen.

"For God so loved the world that He gave His only begotten Son, that whoever believes in Him should not perish but have everlasting life. For God did not send His Son into the world to condemn the world, but that the world through Him might be saved." (John 3:16-17),
