Scripture- Exodus 13:16- "This ceremony will be like a mark branded on your hand or your forehead. It is a reminder that the power of the Lord’s mighty hand brought us out of Egypt.”
Observations- It is interesting that well before they are safely into their journey toward the Promised Land Moses makes sure to talk with all of the people about remembering this day of freedom from slavery throughout the generations that will come after them. The theme of freedom in Christ takes on additional meaning in the New Testament in light of the life, death, and resurrection of Jesus: "For you have been called to live in freedom, my brothers and sisters. But don’t use your freedom to satisfy your sinful nature. Instead, use your freedom to serve one another in love." (Galatians 5:13)
Application- Americans just took some time to remember the gift of freedom as a people, a nation, so many others made significant sacrifices to achieve 242 years ago. Even more importantly we regularly take time to consider the sacrifice of Jesus Christ to bring us the gift of His freedom. "So Christ has truly set us free. Now make sure that you stay free, and don’t get tied up again in slavery to the law." (Galatians 5:1)
Prayer- Thank You, Lord, for Your call in the Bible to remember and be grateful for Who You are and for all You have done. I guess the call to remember is so prevalent in Your Word, because we are so prone to forget or take Your blessings for granted.
