Scripture- 2 Chronicles 35:22a- But Josiah refused to listen to Neco, to whom God had indeed spoken, and he would not turn back.
Observations- King Josiah made a critical mistake. On the basis of the fact that the King of Egypt was a pagan who worshiped false gods he made the assumption that the living God wouldn't bother to speak through Neco, but the Bible tells us that God did in fact speak through this foreign king. Josiah's refusal to properly discern God's voice speaking through even Neco led to his downfall and death.
Application- One of the lessons of a passage like this is certainly humility. Yes, God primarily speaks through His Word the Bible, but we have to be open to additional voices that God might want to use to get our attention and those voices may be incredibly surprising. When has God used an unlikely person to reveal an important message to you? Did you listen or reject the word? What happened?
Prayer- Lord, thank You for Your faithfulness and love. I want to clearly hear Your voice speak into my life, so help me be open to listening for You as You reveal Yourself in Your Word, but also help me be open and available to surprising and unlikely sources that may genuinely represent You and invite me to change my intended course of action. Amen.
A Roman officer wanted Jesus to heal his slave and he expressed surprisingly great faith, which led to him being lifted up as an example of faith: "When Jesus heard this, he was amazed. Turning to the crowd that was following him, he said, 'I tell you, I haven’t seen faith like this in all Israel!' And when the officer’s friends returned to his house, they found the slave completely healed." (Luke 7:9-10),
