Read Joshua 24

ScriptureJoshua 24:15- “But if you refuse to serve the Lord, then choose today whom you will serve. Would you prefer the gods your ancestors served beyond the Euphrates? Or will it be the gods of the Amorites in whose land you now live? But as for me and my family, we will serve the Lord.”

Observations- This challenging word of decision from Joshua contains the most famous phrase in this book. He reviews with all the people assembled God’s faithfulness throughout their history. He reminded them of all God had done on their behalf in their unique generation, and here Joshua invited them to consider their future. There were many options of what or whom to worship, which can be defined as anyone or anything that serves as our ultimate concern.

Application- Look around you as you walk through your day and you’ll find many idols to bow down before and worship. Remember whatever gets our ultimate concern and attention is really what we worship, regardless of who or what we say we worship. Our ultimate concern could be a habit, hurt, or hang up we've been giving so much attention to in our life. Our ultimate concern could look back at us in the mirror each morning as we worship at the altar of me, myself, and I. Our ultimate concern could be related to the pursuit of more money or stuff. We could bend the knee at the altar of politics as if some earthly leader has the capacity to solve all of our biggest problems when only deeper relationships with Jesus Christ will do. Some of us have been known to worship our jobs.

Some folks bow down at the altar of family- a very good gift in life- but it can't take the place God alone deserves. Good relationships or things that are invested with ultimate value and concern turn into idolatry. What is really your ultimate concern?

Prayer- Dear God, thank You for all the ways You communicate Your amazing love and life transforming grace. Help me never choose to worship anyone or anything but You. This day I commit to worship and serve You! Come alongside me and help me this day to make the best decisions possible through my one and only life to honor You and bring You glory. Amen.

“You must not have any other god but me." (Exodus 20:3),
