Scripture- Joshua 23:16- "If you break the covenant of the Lord your God by worshiping and serving other gods, his anger will burn against you, and you will quickly vanish from the good land he has given you.”
Observations- Joshua had led the people of God well and he was preparing them for his death in this chapter. They had mostly responded well to his leadership, but he wanted them to understand the reality of consequences for any future decisions to be disobedient to God's covenant. The One who had brought them this far longed to lead them into the future with covenant love and mercy.
Application- Time and time again the Israelites found themselves in the predicament of having to face the consequences of their own disobedience. They forgot who they were and they forgot how much their God loved them. We do, too. Our sin and disobedience is always a failure of forgetfulness- forgetting the depth of God's great love for us. Are you aware of how much God loves you today?
Prayer- (by St. Apollonius- died in 185) Give us a measure of your Spirit that we may be enabled to obey your teaching: to pacify anger, to take part in pity, to moderate desire, to increase love, to put away sorrow, to cast away vain glory, not to be vindictive, not to fear death; ever entrusting our spirit to the immortal God...Amen.
