Read Joshua 22

Scripture- Joshua 22:34- The people of Reuben and Gad named the altar “Witness,” for they said, “It is a witness between us and them that the Lord is our God, too.”
Observations- There was a deep misunderstanding about the meaning behind the building of an altar between tribes on the east side of the Jordan River and most of the tribes on the wast side. The west saw it as a threat to the rightful place of the Tabernacle for sacrifices, but the east merely intended it as a reminder that they, too, had a right to make sacrifices and worship in the Tabernacle, too. They prepared for war, but talked it through in way that both sides understood one another better.
Application- While the first reaction of the west was to prepare for war, isn't it good they decided to have a face to face conversation about what everyone was concerned about as they looked at the future? It's important in Jesus' church that we assume the best about one another without "preparing to go to war": "Then make me truly happy by agreeing wholeheartedly with each other, loving one another, and working together with one mind and purpose." (Philippians 2:2)
Prayer- Dear Lord, I thank You for listening to me, even when I don't have much to say. When all I have to bring You is my grumbling and complaining, You still listen and lovingly point me to a better response. I pray that You will help all of us assume the best about others at New Hope as we seek to fulfill Your mission of making more and better followers of Jesus Christ in the power of the Holy Spirit. Amen.
"And may the Master pour on the love so it fills your lives and splashes over on everyone around you, just as it does from us to you." (1 Thessalonians 3:12- Message),
