Scripture- Joshua 21:45- Not a single one of all the good promises the Lord had given to the family of Israel was left unfulfilled; everything he had spoken came true.
Observations- In this chapter certain towns were designated as places for the Levites to live and make their homes. It was the responsibility of every other tribe to provide space and resources for them, since they didn't receive their own territory so they could serve the Lord. As all the tribes honored this request from God, they came to realize God had delivered on everything He had promised to the people as they left Egypt and slavery and moved toward the Promised Land many years earlier.
Application- I imagine the Israelites would have preferred to take a much shorter route into the fullness of God's promises for them, but their disobedience and complaining got in the way. I suspect it would have been tempting for the tribes to not to give territory to the Levites, but perhaps they had learned the hard way that obedience was the better pathway. Because it doesn't come naturally to any of us, we must learn the pathway of obedience and joyful, non-complaining service to the Lord and the people He loves, which is, of course, everyone. We get to be grateful as the promises of God unfold in our lives slowly over time as we grow and learn to listen to what God says and follow through on it. How are you doing on that today?
Prayer- (Unknown source) "Lord, I have been so good today. I haven’t raised my voice to anyone. I haven’t called anyone a rude name. I haven’t yelled and screamed, ranted and raved. I haven’t even broken anything or hurt anybody. But Lord, I’m about to get out of bed in five minutes and I will probably need your help then." God, we always need Your help! Amen.
"And so, dear brothers and sisters, I plead with you to give your bodies to God because of all he has done for you. Let them be a living and holy sacrifice—the kind he will find acceptable. This is truly the way to worship him. Don’t copy the behavior and customs of this world, but let God transform you into a new person by changing the way you think. Then you will learn to know God’s will for you, which is good and pleasing and perfect. (Romans 12:1-2),
