Scripture- Joshua 19:47- But the tribe of Dan had trouble taking possession of their land, so they attacked the town of Laish. They captured it, slaughtered its people, and settled there. They renamed the town Dan after their ancestor.
Observations- The tribe of Dan failed to follow through on taking the allotment of land assigned to them by God through Joshua; instead they attacked people in a territory that posed little danger, threat, or risk. The Danites took the easy way out in finding a place to settle down, even though it wasn’t in line with God’s instructions. They chose to live away from the allotment of land the Lord had in store for them. We’ll see the consequences of the path they chose in the Book of Judges.
Application- Once again we see a group of people choosing their own easier way over the way that God had chosen for them. Sometimes things seem too hard or not worth the effort to us, too, but God doesn't appreciate our ethical and moral shortcuts to getting our own way, especially when it's not in line with being rooted in God's Word as we seek to live out the truth with grace. The example of the tribe of Dan “doing their own thing” serves as a warning to all who will listen. The path of least resistance isn't always the best path in life for a fully devoted follower of Jesus Christ.
Prayer- Dear Lord, thank You for leading and guiding me in Your paths. Help each of us
be more open to following Your Son, Jesus Christ, fully and completely as we listen for His voice to speak into our lives individually and corporately at New Hope. Guide us to pursue Your best path in ways that honor You no matter what. Keep calling me into new avenues of joyful service. What's next, O Lord? Amen.
"Now may the God of peace- who brought up from the dead our Lord Jesus, the great Shepherd of the sheep, and ratified an eternal covenant with his blood- may he equip you with all you need for doing his will. May he produce in you, through the power of Jesus Christ, every good thing that is pleasing to him. All glory to him forever and ever! Amen." (Hebrews 13:20-21),
