Scripture- 2 Samuel 17:23- When Ahithophel realized that his advice had not been followed, he saddled his donkey, went to his hometown, set his affairs in order, and hanged himself. He died there and was buried in the family tomb.
Observations- Ahithopel had been King David's most trusted adviser, but as soon as looked like Absalom was going to be able to defeat his father, Ahithopel switched his allegiance. He was an opportunist not concerned about doing the right thing; rather he was concerned about doing whatever would bring him the most power and influence. He was broken when Absalom didn't go with his plan, for he knew the power and influence he sought were no longer going to be his.
Application- When we "climb the ladder of success," we'd better make sure we have our ladder against the right building. If we have goals like Ahithopel- influence and power for their own sake- we definitely have our ladder on the wrong building. Yes, we want to grow and improve by trying and training as Christ followers and that requires us to have the right definition of "success." Is your ladder on the right building?
Prayer- Lord, thank You for examples in Your Word of people like Ahithopel who made the wrong choices. This serves as a cautionary tale to make sure we don't seek to succeed at an unworthy goal in this life that won't bring You glory and build our character. Help me
climb well in this life toward the goals and values You hold dear- like doing things on earth the way You do them in heaven. Amen.
