Advent: A Season of Preparation (2018)

Dec 02, 2018 | Jamie Westlake

Happy New Year!

This Sunday, December 2, we will celebrate a “Happy New Year!” Advent marks the beginning of a new year on the Christian calendar where we are invited to prepare for the first coming of Jesus Christ- fully human and fully God- as a vulnerable baby not to hide the nature of the Father, but to reveal Him in love. In the second coming Jesus Christ will return in power and final victory, which inspires us to celebrate our faith and grow our faith.

We will look at one of Paul’s earliest letters to a young congregation in Thessalonika. 1 Thessalonians 3:9–13 says, “How we thank God for you! Because of you we have great joy as we enter God’s presence. Night and day we pray earnestly for you, asking God to let us see you again to fill the gaps in your faith. May God our Father and our Lord Jesus bring us to you very soon. And may the Lord make your love for one another and for all people grow and overflow, just as our love for you overflows. May he, as a result, make your hearts strong, blameless, and holy as you stand before God our Father when our Lord Jesus comes again with all his holy people. Amen.”
